The Keith and Susan Rhoades Memorial Fund

When an English woman asked me how she might see the full dimension of the country, I said to drive highway 50 from ocean to ocean. If she begins in the East, I know the very mile where she will exclaim from behind her windshield that she has at last arrived in the American West. That spot is in Kansas in the Flint Hills in Chase County.

William Least Heat-Moon, PrairyErth

At Home in the Hills

Like the Hills he loved, Keith was understated and unpretentious, strong and serene, deep and wise, a true natural. He was also a hoot.

He and his late-wife Susan shared decades of adventures together in the Flint Hills – making unforgettable memories at Coyne Creek and the Home Place for friends, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and extended family. Here, their natural, complementary dispositions – Keith’s love of solitude and Susan’s love of hospitality – were paired with perfection.

Keith was at home in the Hills for as long as his health would allow. In our hearts, we will always picture him there: no walls, all vista.

Everyone who knew him recognized his matchless qualities as an encourager and mentor. To reflect his heart for others, it is most fitting to direct gifts to the Tallgrass Legacy Alliance to go toward mentoring and educating young Flint Hills ranchers.

The Keith and Susan Rhoades Memorial Fund has been established to continue their legacy through the conservation of the Flint Hills’ tallgrass prairie – some of the last stands of tallgrass prairie left in the nation – by supporting the future ranchers who will cherish and care for the Hills as much as they did.

Memorial Fund Purpose and Intent

All funds are to be used for the continuation of Rancher-to-Rancher mentoring, as well as the preservation of young Rancher education in the Flint Hills.

Specifically, these funds will be used to support the continuation of the TLA Rancher-to-Rancher Mentoring Program and the preservation of the education component of the TLA Young and Beginning Rancher Program.
