TLA Annual Meeting and Prairie Chicken Workshop

TLA Friends: Thursday, February 23, 2023 will be our first Tallgrass Legacy Alliance (TLA) event of the year. We will be at the Territory Ballroom (https://theterritoryballroom.com/) in Council Grove, KS. The Territory Ballroom is a wonderful new venue owned by Nicky and Shawn Tiffany. This will be a special event. For a while now, we’ve wanted to host an event focused on greater prairie chickens. They are a signature species of our tallgrass prairie and important to most of us in the Flint Hills. We are honored that PBS TV producer Tim Barksdale will be with us to present and discuss his award winning video “Battle on the Booming Grounds” (http://www.robwhitehair.com/films/battle-booming-grounds). Much of this movie was filmed in the Flint Hills with scenes and interviews of people you will recognize. Tim will be with us all day to meet with old friends, new friends, and talk about the movie. Following the movie, we will have a presentation by KDWP Small Game Biologist Kent Fricke discussing the current status of prairie chickens in Kansas followed by a panel discussion featuring Flint Hills ranchers, scientists, and organization staff, etc. discussing challenges and opportunities related to prairie chickens. A few other pieces of TLA business will complete the day. Lunch will be provided and sponsored by Frontier Farm Credit. As always, I will need a meal count for the caterer.
